Slam Dunk: Calls and Emails Pour In for Thresholds Youth |
A Sun-Times column about a player on the Young Adult Program high school basketball team prompted an outpouring of community support for him.
Member Mario Miller has tremendous talent and class, but didn’t get as much attention as other high school stars. The Thresholds high school is an accredited school that lets students earn high school diplomas, as they receive help in their recovery from mental illness. There aren’t any talent scouts in the audience when the school’s basketball team plays other youth programs.
But the columns by Rick Telander prompted more than 50 calls and emails from Sun-Times readers offering to help however they could. It led to a basketball scholarship at Malcolm X College. Miller signed a letter of intent in April to play there.
“I thought this day would never come, but now it’s finally here,” Miller told the Sun-Times. “All I ever asked for is a chance. And now that I’m getting one, I’m going to do my best to make the most of it . . . to make myself proud and my family proud.”
Two days after the first column ran, Miller and the Thresholds team then went on to win the Interagency Athletic Association championship March 21 in Springfield, along with a good sportsmanship award.
